- Early spring/late winter watering
of evergreen trees will give you a much healthier plant. Evergreens never
go totally dormant so a pail of water in February may look ridiculous to the neighbors
but your trees will thank you.
- Lawn watering is much more
effective if it is done less often but with larger quantities of water. A thorough
soaking 1-2 times a week rather than a little every other day will promote deeper
root growth and therefore your lawn will weather the summer droughts much better.
- Most shrubbery will perform better for you if minor
pruning is done 4 or 5 times a year; rather than a major pruning once a
year or every other year. Remember to prune after flowering is done so you don't
miss the big reason you chose that plant.
- Perennials although relatively
self sufficient still need fertilizing.
A safe way to ensure your plant material is getting the nutrients it needs is
to use a mild fertilizer such as Miracle Gro, just be sure to follow the mixing
instructions. A stronger mix than recommended will have the opposite effect on
most plants.
- Birch trees although a beautiful
addition to a natural looking landscape require a little more attention than most
large deciduous trees. Paint your Birch trees around the base in a band three
times as wide as the diameter of the tree using Cygon or equal treatment. This
will prevent Bronze Birch Borer which is the reason you see so many dead Birch
trees in the residential environment. Wait until after the new spring leaves have
flushed out for the treatment (usually the first part of May).
